Every week, I sit down at my desk and let my inner thoughts flow onto paper. I never know what might come out of these journaling sessions. One day could be about happiness, yet the next could be about something completely different.
Every minute spent on journaling or writing for my blog is totally worth it. I’ve noticed a great increase in my mental health since I’ve started writing. It’s become my favorite creative outlet. This March will mark my two-year anniversary of starting Beyond This Fence. Throughout these two years, I have met some incredible women and men that have shared their personal stories with me. Having a hobby to take your mind off of the potential “negative” parts in your life is key and this is what I have in common with the people I’ve met through blogging. We all use blogging for personal expression and as a form of mental medicine. Due to our commitment to our blogs and ourselves, we treat each other with high levels of respect. There’s a comforting sense of community with my fellow bloggers and I’m so happy to be a part of this world.
Being able to post whatever I want, whenever I want is a great feeling. It’s become a huge part of my life and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. Taking time to sit down and reflect on my emotions has allowed me to focus on myself more. I can connect to other people who share similar interests or feel the same ways I do about certain issues. It’s also really important to know that people are there to support your passions.
This is how everyone should be treating each other. Be there for someone else and support one another. Tell your sister or your best friend how proud you are of them. Listen to other people’s stories. Don’t be afraid to share your own. No-one can do it alone. Open up a notebook, start a blog, or talk to a friend. There’s something for everyone and I can promise that you will see a change in your mentality when you start setting time aside for yourself.
It’s comforting to know exactly who I can go to when I need it. Or when I have a spark of inspiration and a few hours later, I have my new blog post drafted.
Find a hobby that brings you joy and stick with it. My best piece of advice – do more of what makes you happy.
